Sunburn not only feels warm and is painful – it indicates damaged skin. Aggressive sun rays have burned your skin in a sunburn. Depending on the severity of the sunburn, even a third-degree burn could occur; the skin damage from a burn caused by fire and by the sun is therefore similar or the same. We present natural treatment and prevention methods.

Prevention is better than aftercare

Before you look for remedies against sunburn, you should take optimal precautions. This prevents damage to your skin in the first place, which reduces the risk of skin cancer and other sunburn consequences. Additionally, sunburns accelerate skin aging, which unfortunately only becomes visible when it is too late. The best tip against sunburn is therefore proper prevention.

Here, natural sunscreens are recommended. Sun protection is provided in almost all products by titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide has a bright white color; you might know it as white paint from school. When applied to the skin, it reflects sunlight. Natural cosmetic products can not only protect the skin from the sun but also provide holistic care.

Studies indicate that olive oil and coconut oil can have a low sun protection factor. Values of an SPF of about 7 have been observed. Thus, natural oils are by no means as effective as sunscreens but can be helpful in mild sun exposure.

Otherwise, of course, the right choice of clothing is important. We know it from the Arabian desert: short clothing is not recommended there, but long and light-colored clothing along with head coverings. This prevents the skin from being directly exposed to sunlight. Natural fabrics like cotton or linen are also breathable and can therefore protect against excessive heat. Wide-brimmed hats are also recommended as they cover the problem areas of the head and neck.

Natural relief from sunburn

If it is already too late to avoid sunburn, you can rely on natural remedies for relief. What helps against sunburn quickly? Here we can only recommend Aloe Vera recommend it; corresponding plant extracts are included in most after-sun lotions. It seems that the ingredients promote skin healing and reduce inflammation caused by sunburn. Additionally, aloe vera has a cooling and soothing effect on the skin.

While aloe vera gel is often used against sunburn, rarer treatment methods Chamomile tea-compresses and oatmeal baths. Chamomile extracts are recommended due to their anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. Such compresses can also cool the skin if the chamomile tea is cooled.

For oatmeal baths, simply fill a bathtub with lukewarm water and oatmeal. Then you can enjoy a long soak. An oatmeal bath is said to help hydrate and soothe the skin, thereby relieving symptoms such as itching.

Quark and yogurt for sunburn are well-known home remedies. They are used to draw heat away from the skin while simultaneously providing moisture.

These approaches come from naturopathy and therefore have no medical evidence. However, there are study results for aloe vera against sunburn that suggest a positive effect.

Support from homeopathy

Homeopathy is not recognized in conventional medicine. Nevertheless, it is very popular because the active ingredients are highly diluted. For this reason, homeopathic remedies are considered well tolerated, which can be desirable with pharmaceuticals that have many side effects.

Calendula-ointments are recommended in homeopathy against sunburn. Globules with Urtica urens (Nettle) are also gladly used by homeopaths. Ideally, you should consult a doctor or therapist experienced in homeopathy to clarify the possibilities of homeopathy.

What helps against sunburn? Frequently asked questions

What to do for sunburn?

If you notice, for example, while sunbathing that sunburn is developing, you should avoid the sun immediately. Further sun exposure will worsen the burn. In the worst case, severe skin burns can occur, which you will feel and need to treat for days or even weeks.

If sunburn has already occurred, the primary recommendation is treatment with Aloe Vera. An Aloe Vera extract made from 100% Aloe Vera is especially recommended; you can gladly avoid additional "fillers." For further relief of painful symptoms, you can use chamomile tea compresses or oat baths. Often, cooling the sunburn helps.

If the sunburn becomes too severe, medical treatment may be necessary. This is not always the case when the skin peels after sunburn. However, if the sunburn causes (severe) pain, you should see a doctor.

Sunburn: How long does it last?

Of course, this depends entirely on the severity of the burn. The following degrees of severity are distinguished:

  • Mild sunburn: Mild redness and discomfort occur. The skin may already start peeling. Healing should be complete within up to 5 days.
  • Moderate sunburn: Severe redness, swelling, and even blisters can occur. Healing usually takes between 1 - 2 weeks.
  • Severe sunburn: Severe sunburn causes intense pain. Fever, intense redness, and blistering are other symptoms. Recovery can take weeks; we clearly recommend seeing a doctor to, for example, minimize scarring.

What to do for sunburn? Home remedies

As a home remedy, you should have a high-quality and pure Aloe Vera gel at home, which is possibly the best first aid for sunburn. Aloe Vera gel could effectively help reduce sunburn. In Mexico, where the Aloe Vera plant is native, such gels have long been known as remedies for sunburn.
