What is it?

If consuming spelt causes discomfort, celiac disease, which is an intolerance to gluten, may be the cause. The so-called gluten protein is found in many local grains, especially spelt and wheat, but also in barley, oats, and rye. Contrary to the widespread and false assumption that spelt is gluten-free, this ancient grain contains a significant amount of gluten.

Spelt actually contains more gluten than wheat. However, the exact structure of the proteins differs, which is why some people with a wheat intolerance (not celiac disease!) can eat spelt. This is likely where the misconception comes from.

Possible Symptoms of Celiac Disease

Common gastrointestinal complaints:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bloating

Other symptoms:

  • Iron deficiency to iron deficiency anemia
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Lack of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Fertility issues
  • Osteoporosis
  • Folic acid deficiency

Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disease that lasts a lifetime. The immune system reacts to gluten with antibodies that trigger inflammation in the small intestine. If the damage progresses, the body can no longer absorb essential nutrients. This leads to deficiencies in iron, folic acid, and other nutrients. A gluten-free diet is absolutely necessary.

See a Doctor for Spelt Intolerance

Celiac disease usually manifests gradually. Due to the multitude of nonspecific symptoms, it is difficult to recognize. Do not make a self-diagnosis, but clarify your symptoms with a doctor if you suspect you have a spelt intolerance.

Before you completely eliminate gluten, you should first consult your doctor. For a reliable diagnosis, it is necessary to maintain a normal diet including gluten-containing foods for at least three months. Your doctor can tell you whether your spelt intolerance is celiac disease or something else. Accordingly, they will inform you of the next steps to alleviate your symptoms.

Try It Out

Sometimes it helps to eliminate certain foods to identify culprits for the gut and body. Why not try fasting according to Hildegard of Bingen? Our BitterKraft! supports you in this. If it is the spelt that you cannot tolerate, then switch to other grains. Before you initiate a radical gluten diet, we recommend, as mentioned above, to first visit a doctor.
