Occurrence of Cardamom Seeds

Their unique flavor has made cardamom seeds one of the finest and most expensive spices worldwide. In comparison, the plant's natural range is limited to a small area.

Cardamom belongs to the ginger family. Green (Elettaria cardamomum) and Black Cardamom (Amomum subulatum) each represent two different plant genera. The native region of the green variety is Sri Lanka, India, and Iraq. The black variety, on the other hand, originates from Southeast Asia. It is native to Nepal and northern India, at the edge of the Himalayas, extending to southern China.

Ingredients of Cardamom Seeds

The most important ingredients of the perennial plant are found in its seeds. A terpene-rich essential oil forms the main component of cardamom seeds. In the green variety, it consists of 120 individual components. The main effects come from alpha-terpinyl acetate and cineole, which are present in large amounts in the seeds.

Effects of Cardamom Seeds

The essential oil provides the characteristic spicy aroma, somewhat like eucalyptus, and the sweet-spicy taste for which cardamom seeds are known. Black cardamom tastes rather robust and earthy, sometimes slightly smoky. Therefore, these varieties are mainly used to season savory dishes. The green cardamom seeds, on the other hand, have a sweet spiciness – perfect for desserts. It is the green cardamom that is indispensable as a spice for gingerbread, speculaas, and mulled wine during the Christmas season.

Cardamom seeds also have a positive effect on our health and have a long tradition as a natural remedy. Traditional medicine uses it as an antiseptic and antioxidant. The essential oil contained in the seeds is also said to help with gastrointestinal complaints and soothe the digestive tract. Likewise, cardamom seeds are said to relieve cold symptoms and even serve as a natural mood enhancer.

Appearance of Cardamom Seeds

Strong stems emerge from the thickened rhizomes of the cardamom plant, shining bright green above the ground. Leaves and inflorescences branch off from them. Several of the sought-after cardamom seeds can be found in the plant's fruit capsules.
